What's Wrong With This Picture?

So yesterday I was standing in line to pay for my gas & I overheard something interesting. Just as clerk was instructed, she asked the man in front of me if he would like to donate $1 to Jerry's Kids. He quickly replied "pssstt...heck they can donate money to me, I'm broke"! Then he pays for his $5 pack of cigarettes & walks out. Is something wrong with this picture? The clerk & I just looked at each other in disbelief as I say under my breath "you sure can buy those cigarettes though".
